Inhaltsangabe: Albert Birchs Jugendliebe Edwina Freed tritt in Kontakt mit ihm und stimmt überraschenderweise zu, ihn zu heiraten. Sie kommt mit ihrem kränklichen Baby mit dem Namen Toby an. Sie sagt Albert, dass das Baby ihren toten Schwestern gehört. Edwina lebt sehr zurückgezogen. Sie erlaubt Albert nicht Toby näher zu kommen. Später kommen zwei Männer aus der Anstalt, aus der sie entkam und nehmen Edwina mit. Als sie weggebracht wird, bittet sie zu Albert, sich um Toby zu kümmern. Er geht in Tobys Zimmer und findet eine Katze. Auf dem Halsband steht "Toby".

[As we begin, Alfred is looking down at something steaming]
Alfred Hitchcock: "Double, double, toil and trouble. Fire burn and cauldron bubble".
[The camera pulls back to reveal he is heating a baby bottle. He tests the temperature on his arm]
Alfred Hitchcock: I don't know why people do this. It's not at all good for the cuffs. Takes the starch out of them. I wonder if it does that to babies? Of course, that must be the idea. As you shall soon see, tonight's play bears a relation to the foregoing, however slight. It is a tragical, comical, historical, pastoral, musical mystery entitled Toby. Toby takes place in New York in 1910 and on your television screen in just a moment.
Alfred Hitchcock: By an odd coincidence, we have a story about a man who decided to be someone other than himself. And by an equally odd coincidence, it is rehearsed and ready to start. Here it is.
